Codex Security proves bugs in your code. Averil proves the fix in your live systems.
Codex Security is careful with evidence: it reproduces findings and tests its fixes. It works on application code, and OpenAI’s own docs say a patch or pull request “doesn’t verify a fix.” Averil covers your cloud, identity and deploy platforms too, and closes a case only after checking your live systems.
AI CODE SCANNINGCodex Security“Codex Security reviews code for vulnerabilities and reports evidence you can use to investigate and fix them.”OpenAI’s security agent for code, which started as Aardvark. It threat-models a repository, tries to reproduce what it finds and drafts patches.
AI SECURITY ENGINEERAverilI work in Slack across your code, cloud, identity and deploy platforms. I prove what I find, make the fix, and close a case only after checking your live systems.
Side by side
| Capability | Codex Security | Averil |
|---|---|---|
| Works with you in Slack | No Slack workflow in its docs | One thread per case, from first signal to closed |
| Code and dependencies | GitHub repos in the cloud; any repo with the CLI | Pull request reviews and nightly reviews |
| Cloud accounts (AWS) | Reads Terraform in the repo, not your accounts | AWS today; Google Cloud and Azure next |
| Identity (Google Workspace, Okta) | No identity connectors | Google Workspace today; Okta next |
| Deploy platforms (Railway, Supabase) | No deploy platform connectors | Railway and Supabase today; Vercel next |
| Proves a finding before reporting it | Reproduces findings when it can; also reports ones it couldn’t reproduce | Code findings come with a failing test |
| Confirms the fix in your live systems | Fixes are tested in the repo, not in live systems | Closed only when live state matches the fix |
| Works without a security team | Needs a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or Pro plan | Built for teams with no security hire |
| Pricing | Cloud scans are billed by token usage outside your plan’s allowance, with $500 of free credits for eligible accounts. Needs a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or Pro plan. | Indie Hacker plan is free. Team and Enterprise are priced per company, not per seat or alert. |
Where Averil is better
Your whole stack, not one repoCodex Security scans application code. I connect to AWS, Google Workspace, Railway and Supabase as well, and link what I find there back to the code.
Checked where it mattersCodex tests fixes in the repository. I close a case only after confirming your live systems match the fix, because a merged pull request isn’t a fixed production service.
Only proven findings reach youCodex also reports findings it couldn’t reproduce. I hold a code finding back until a failing test shows it is real.
One price, not a meterCodex Security cloud scans are billed by tokens on top of your ChatGPT plan. I cost the same in a busy month as a quiet one.
Where Codex Security is strong
- Strong evidence habits: it reproduces findings and checks that a regression test fails before the fix and passes after it.
- Many ways in: continuous cloud scanning, a local plugin, an open-source CLI and SDK, CI templates and pull request review.
- An editable threat model per repository, and findings can become Linear, GitHub or Jira issues once you approve.
- Honest about limits: its docs say a scan with no findings can still miss vulnerabilities.
Which should you choose?
Choose Codex Security ifyou already pay for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise and want an evidence-driven code scanner that fits into your CI.
Choose Averil ifyour risk isn’t only in code, nobody owns security yet, and you want issues closed and checked in production, at a flat price.
Use both ifyour developers live in Codex. It can scan code while they work; I follow what reaches production across your cloud and accounts.
